PECA

PECA stands for “Pterygium Excision und conjunctival Autograft”. This is the most up-to-date surgical technique. The corneal part is removed using a hockey knife and care is taken not to damage corneal stroma. Also the scar tissue adjacent to the limbus is removed to leave a fresh edge of conjunctival tissue. That bare sclera is then covered with a conjunctival graft harvested from the superior-temporal limbus. This graft is fixed with fibrin glue and/or sutures. This technique helps in getting a perfect fit in nearly all cases, transferring a few stem cell to the damaged limbal part. Whereas older techniques showed recurrence rates of up to 70%, this newest technique improved rates to 5% with excellent cosmetic results.
